Cross-cultural experiences

I’m still getting used to the idea that sunup is around 4.30 am and sundown about 9.30pm, and that it can be as hot and steamy here as back home – New York is forecast to be 30C today. I’ll be back there later today, as it’s Move-in Day at my summer school residential hall. Can’t wait to experience my very own 10×8 foot box in that heat…

The highlight of yesterday’s rich cross-cultural experiences was a visit to Stop & Shop (pron. ‘Staarp’n’Shaarp’). Looking around, it’s easy to believe that the proportion of Americans who are obese (often morbidly) is set to rise from the current 34 percent to 44 percent by 2030. I’m sure even the fresh fruit and vegetables have been injected with corn syrup. As for the cakes, well, aren’t these a turn-on?

OOOh, yummy…

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, hence the patriotically-coloured icing. I do hope it’s laden with all sorts of hyperactivity-causing colouring agents, to get the children away from their couches and monitors for some vigorous exercise – and I don’t mean just flag-waving.
