Nearer to heaven (Triptych)

In 2013 I flew down to Sydney. A big storm was brewing, and we flew between columns of cumulus that towered above. It was like flying through a Greek ruin. I finally understood what “the sublime” means. The use of textured epoxy gives a sculptural quality to each panel.
White sky day

All through summer here, the sky’s in turmoil. When it’s a ‘white sky day’, we can relax.
Nephele’s spell

Nephele – a Greek phantom-goddess created out of cloud by Zeus, to test Ixion’s adulterous advances to Zeus’ wife Hera – is the ultimate cloud-figure. It ended badly for Ixion. Nephele’s spell does things to us all.
Throe

Throe comes from a well of passion. Beginning as an abstract work with organic roots, it developed its own form and acquired characteristics of the female body. I think there’s an interaction between the hand and a work as it is being made. The hand carries a memory of other touches made during one’s life, […]
Venus Looking For Velasquez

Venus looking for Velasquez is another variation on my original Venus Figure (2009). Does the artist seek out the form, or does the form seek out the artist? Does each seek out the other? This work acknowledges the constraints under which many artists have worked when depicting the sensual human form. Whether it is the church in […]
Venus Dancing

Venus Dancing is a variation on my original Venus Figure (2009). They acknowledge the ongoing power of the fecund woman, and the position of Venus figures as the oldest known sculptures.
Venus Figure

Venus Figure revisits the most enduring of sculptural forms: the fertile woman. The abundant figure carries as much now as it did when first sculpted over 20,000 years ago. Whether representing lust, desire, motherhood or some unknown religious purpose, it is still one of the most potent – and controversial – forms ever made.
The Sitter

The Sitter is a contemplative piece for a garden. When do we find time today to sit quietly and be at peace with ourselves and the world? The wrinkled and perforated skin suggests a long history of just being.
Knelt

Knelt is an accidental work, in that I didn’t consciously set out to create it. I’d ditched another project because of a lack of exhibition space, and decided to experiment with a smaller, more abstract work. I had this simple line drawing nagging way at me but once I started sticking bits of styrofoam together and […]
Still Life (Seeing Myself Dead)

Still Life (Seeing Myself Dead) is a response to today’s emphasis on eternal youth. I could have called it Always Look your Best. This work helps us to consider fundamental questions such as Will I die? What does it mean to be dead? It also raises the questions of appearance … How will I look when I’m old […]
