The old darling has had another outing, this time to the Byron Bay Writers Festival 2014 Sculpture Show last weekend. And once again, she enjoyed the company, and the company enjoyed her. “Great presence, great story!” enthused one festival patron. The Reader ended up with the Gaia Award for Best Sculpture, as well.
Thanks to some rosewood legs, she can now get about more easily, but it’s still nice for her to sit and watch and listen. There was plenty to listen to, as well – Jeanette Winterson on writing, reformed former PM Malcolm Fraser on Australian-American relations, investigative journalist Kate McClymont on corruption in local and state politics, and much more.
It was the best-attended BBWF ever, and was blessed with fine weather until the last day’s drizzle chilled things off.
In her off-moments, The Reader settled in to reading her own book, called “The Story Starts”. She didn’t seem to mind the rain.
